About Me

Why I chose Serve

From a young my parents have taught many things, but three things really stuck out to me. One, always do the right thing, no matter the situation or circumstance. Two, dedicate your time to someone other than yourself, in other words volunteer or do service. And lastly, always be willing to try new things, whether it is a job or a new style of clothing, in my case I am always down to try new foods. The second rule is the one that really inspired me to volunteer and dedicate part of my life to service. When I was younger my parents really forced me to volunteer, they would take me along with them when they were volunteering in the community. At First I was mad, I would always wonder why can’t I stay home like the other toddlers my age and play on my swing set and watch TV. As time passed by and I grew older in age and wisdom I learned that my parents were right all these years, and it wasn’t that bad after all. I grew to love volunteering, and continued it till today. When I got older, I realized that there was a major benefit it service, first the feeling of helping others is amazing, and feeling satisfied that I helped someone in need of my service. I really learned that a little service, can have a greater effect on someone else’s life, which is something I didn’t realize till I got older.

Why I chose serve is an easy question. How awesome would it be for me to take a yearlong course dedicated to service and community work? Part of being in a Living Learning community like SERVE, I am developing a close relationship with all the members. Now that I’m in SERVE, I’m really glad I joined this LLC because I met so many great people, who I’ve developed strong relationships with within the second week of school.

In my early days of volunteering, I used to volunteer with dad at a local food pantry and soup kitchen. We would often pack meals for the homeless or collect canned goods. The organization I volunteered at with my aunt, we packaged boxes of canned and non-perishable foods like beans, spaghetti, fruits, vegetables, and boxes of macaroni and pasta. These boxes would usually last a family a week to ten days. After boxing and packing hundreds of boxes, it really made me feel like I made a difference in someone else’s life. For families who are struggling to cover expenses, and are living pay check to pay check, not having to worry about a meal for their family is a big deal. It felt really nice to do this, hopefully in SERVE I will have the opportunity to participate in an event like this. Earlier in the year there was an event by Feeding America. As I got older I joined girl scouts, this is really when I learned about serving the community, for me girl scouts didn’t last too long because my troop broke apart. But in the short amount of time I was in girls scouts I really learned a lot. The troop I learned how to become a leader and helped my troop leader organize food drives and fundraisers. One of my favorite events we did was a car wash, although we all got we and dirty the money we raised went to the local fire and rescue squad in the community. As a senior and current freshman I volunteered at the National Air and Space Museum, and really loved that place. I meet so many interesting and great people.

All the experiences I have had growing up has shaped me, and help me get where I am today. Because of past experiences in service, I have learned to care for others unconditionally, help others in need, and feel great after doing something nice. All the volunteering I have done in the past has guided me to what I want to do in the future, I want to dedicate part of my life or time to helping others, whether it is something small like raking the leaves for the neighbor to something bigger like helping in a foreign nation. To answer the question why I joined serve is simple, it’s because I want to continue my pursuit of volunteering and giving back to the community.
